Conner
“C‑Weed” Weddell

Sixteen years old. From the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Racing — and beating — grown men who've won national championships. Here's who he is.

The Story

All he ever
talked about

Conner Weddell grew up in Centreville, Maryland, in a family where racing wasn't a hobby — it was the family language. His dad Mike raced arena series under the nickname “Weedy,” and when Conner was born, the paddock handed him his name before he could walk: C-Weed.

At four and a half he climbed into a quarter midget owned by family friend Tyler Hughes and turned his first laps around a high school parking lot. Twelve years later, Hughes is his crew chief, and the kid from the parking lot has 19 feature wins, three INEX state championships and a track title — and a growing reputation as the most dangerous teenager in Virginia Late Model racing.

“It’s really all I ever talked about since I could talk. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”

Racing the best
every Saturday

In 2026, Conner stepped into the deepest weekly field in the country: South Boston Speedway's Hitachi Energy Late Model Stock division, against multi-time NASCAR national champions like Lee Pulliam and Peyton Sellers. In his very first start there he took the lead from Pulliam, led 15 laps, and lost by less than a second. Since: a first career pole, five runner-up finishes, and a top-five points battle.

“This is like racing a Martinsville heat race every week… I think the competition at South Boston Speedway this season is harder than running the CARS Tour.”

The Operation

Not a kid with
a helmet bag

The #8W is fielded by Tyler Hughes Motorsports of Thornburg, Virginia — with Conner as a THM development driver and Hughes, an 18-time Late Model Stock race winner, as crew chief. It's a Ford Mustang–bodied Late Model Stock Car with Banks Racing Engines power and Simpson safety gear, backed by the family-run Weddell Motorsports program founded in 2013.

Conner isn't a passenger in the program: he's in the shop five days a week, building and turning wrenches on his own race cars.

“He works really hard. He comes in the shop and works on his own race cars… Conner’s not some kid that just shows up with a helmet bag.”

Tyler Hughes · Crew Chief

“He’s always very receptive to criticism and trying to be better every week. He’s not stuck in his ways of, ‘hey, this is how I drive.’”
